Honoring the Legacy of Steve Atherton
This preserve exists today because of the vision and dedication of the late Steve Atherton—a lifelong conservationist, educator, and advocate for Iowa’s wild places.
Steve devoted his life to protecting the state's wetlands, prairies, and native wildlife. As a beloved professor of Parks & Natural Resources at Kirkwood Community College, he inspired countless students to care deeply for the land. His conservation work went far beyond the classroom—Steve played a key role in the reintroduction of peregrine falcons and trumpeter swans, and helped launch the Lake Macbride Raptor Project.
Over the years, Steve’s efforts helped restore thousands of acres of land back to their natural state. His passion and impact were widely recognized, earning him multiple awards and the admiration of Iowa’s conservation community.
After his sudden passing in 2008, the Atherton Memorial Wetland along Ely Road was named in his honor—a lasting tribute to the work he loved and the places he protected.
Today, the preserve is lovingly stewarded by Steve’s niece, kahle who carries forward his mission of conservation and education. Her ongoing care ensures that the land remains a place for wildlife to flourish, for ecosystems to heal, and for people to connect with the beauty of Iowa’s native landscapes.
